Aphthae

Stomatitis aphtosa (aphthae) or aphthae are sores in the mouth that tend to frequent and recurrence at different time intervals. The cause of canker sores is not known, but their occurrence is affected by a few factors: physical or emotional stress, lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet, impaired immunity, allergic conditions, metabolic and hormonal disorders, anemia, stomach and intestinal diseases and some medications. The hereditary factor stands out, because half of the patients in the family have a relative who suffers from aphthae.

They most commonly appear on the moving parts of the oral mucosa, on the tongue, cheek, or lip mucosa, never on the hard palate and on the gums. Canker sores are more common in children, girls, and younger women than in the elderly.

They can appear in three forms, such as:

  • small canker sores (less than 1 cm and very painful)
  • large canker sores (larger than 1 cm and not painful)
  • cold sores like herpes so-called herpetiform aphthae (many small painful sores)

A burning sensation and / or roughness may appear on the mucosa a day or two before the outbreak of canker sores. Before the appearance of the wound, the mucous membrane was red and swollen in those places. The wounds are round or oval, bounded by a clearly expressed red ring. The bottom of the wound is whitish. Aphthous lesions of the mucous membrane are very painful, and the pain intensifies during speech, eating and all muscle movements.

The characteristic of aphthae is that they often and suddenly recur, and up to several times a year. This is accompanied by increased salivation, swollen lymph nodes, fever, and chill.

In the treatment it is important to repair everything that can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes, such as carious teeth, sharp tooth edges, etc., with the use of mild antiseptic preparations.
